Five (5) lessons to make you think about the way we treat people.

1 – First Important Lesson – Cleaning Lady.

During my second month of college, our professor
gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student
and had breezed through the questions until I read
the last one:

‘What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?’

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the
cleaning woman several times.. She was tall,
dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question
blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if
the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

‘Absolutely,’ said the professor.. ‘In your careers
you will meet many people. All are significant. They
deserve your attention and care, even if all you do
is smile and say ‘hello.’

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her
name was Dorothy.

2. – Second Important Lesson – Pickup in the Rain

One night, at 11:3 0 p.m., an older African American
woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway
t rying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had
broken down and she desperately needed a ride.
Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car.
A young white man stopped to help her, generally
unheard of in those conflict-filled 60s.. The man
took her to safety, helped her get assistance and
put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his
address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a
knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a
giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A
special note was attached..

It read:
‘Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway
the other night. The rain drenched not only my
clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along.
Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying
husband’s bedside just before he passed away… God
bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving
others.’

3 – Third Important Lesson – Always remember those who serve.

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less,
a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and
sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

‘How much is an ice cream sundae?’ he asked.

‘Fifty cents,’ replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and
studied the coins in it.

‘Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?’ he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the
waitress was growing impatient.

‘Thirty-five cents,’ she brusquely replied.

The little boy again counted his coins.

‘I’ll have the plain ice cream,’ he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on
the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice
cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress
came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the
table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish,
were two nickels and five pennies..

You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had
to have enough left to leave her a tip.

4 – Fourth Important Lesson. – The obstacle=2 0in Our Path.

In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a
roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if
anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the
king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by
and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the
King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of
vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the
peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the
stone to the side of the road. After much pushing
and straining, he finally succeeded. After the
peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed
a purse lying in the road where the boulder had
been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note
from the King indicating that the gold was for the
person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The
peasant learned what many of us never understand!

Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition.

5 – Fifth Important Lesson – Giving When it Counts…

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a
hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who
was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only
chance of recovery appeared to be a blood
transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had
miraculously survived the same disease and had
developed the antibodies needed to combat the
illness. The doctor explained the situation to her
little brother, and asked the little boy if he would
be willing to give his blood to his sister.

I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a
deep breath and saying, ‘Yes I’ll do it if it will
save her.’ As the transfusion progressed, he lay in
bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did,
seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his
face grew pale and his smile faded.

He looked up at the doctor and asked with a
trembling voice, ‘Will I start to die right away?’.

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the
doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his
sister ALL of his blood in order to save her but he had chosen to save her anyway.

so…i’m trying to create my website (www.geniusofthesickmind.com) using domain.com’s site builder. can i just say that it’s the most frustrating process ever? i half-way want to reload SharePoint Designer and just use that. it’s the publishing that’s giving me fits. (The site cannot be published to the specified location.
FTP error: Cannot connect to the host.) so, i need to figure out what they’re talking about.

it irritates me b/c i just want to get it done so i can start playing w/ it and enjoying it. instead, i’m forced to THINK on a saturday. suck!

my grandmother used to play this game where she would try and find my sugarbowl. she’d check b/t each one of my ribs all the way up until i was a giggling fool. i’ve discovered that lilly is quite fond of the game too. everytime i tell her i’m going to find her sugarbowl, ‘i want a little sugar in my bowl’ by nina simone runs thru my head. strange combination i know.

we are having a great time down here. lilly’s doing all kids of smiling and it’s so cute. i just had my hair done – ah, the good life. the rest of the troups have been sent to the mall with orders to bring back presents and dinner. i’ve been plagued with migraines since i got here. i’m fine for about an hour or two when i first wake up but then it’s like my cheek bones are trying to get as far away from each other as possible, leaving a bruised skull in their wake. yeh. annoying. good thing i enjoy my own company so much. that and spending money down here is a joke.

well….spending my own money, that is.

k off to watch the first season of The Tudors.

so…it’s the finale of american idol and i find myself actually enjoying it (thanks to my fast forward button and DVR). they had zz top on there! then again, they also had bryan adams. hrm. i’m surprised how different the others sound compared to the final two. but that’s not the most disturbing thing. the most unsettling announcement they’ve made so far is the American Idol THEME PARK they’re going to build at mickey mouse’s house. so now, there are even more 42 hour long lines to wait in. if waiting in lines is your thing.

okay. the jonas brothers. i don’t understand the draw. ppl are freaking out tho so they must have something. i guess you could compare that to the old New Kids on the Block craze.

and speaking of crazy reality shows (yes we were speaking of them), what’s w/ ‘moment of truth’ or whatever it’s called?? almost every single show after the writers’ strike was over decided to kill someone off, which is weird. so i’m wondering if reality tv is what we’re going to be stuck with. seeing as So You Think You Can Dance starts tomorrow, i’m going to try not to speak too badly of the other reality shows. they say that Big Brother is a ’social experiment’ and i have to agree. however, it’s more of an experiment on viewers low standards and what drivel they can put on tv and watch the crazed masses lap it up.

wow. george michael looks good. does he ever not wear sunglasses? okay, his song is gay.

son of a monkey. i wanted David A. to win. *sigh*

my office is small.  maybe 17 ppl here at once on a good day.  generally, it’s more like 10.  i like it this way.  i can get lots of work done with minimal interaction with people.  however, due to an unfortunate incident (the lady was stealing from co-workers), we are down a receptionist.  so because there are only three ladies who picked up calls when the lines were busy, i’m now forced to do the same.  (it should be noted that i absolutely hate the phone – another unfortunate incident [read: car wreck] has made it fairly impossible for me to understand what ppl are saying on the phone) somehow, i’m the only one currently in the office AT ALL.  everyone went from a mtg to lunch, or from their desk to walking, or from their desk to lunch. 

usually, i wouldn’t care.  but today, i need to go to walgreens and get meds.  and i told them as much.  i’m five days off of them and the withdrawal/side effects are getting out of control, as is my damn temper.  AND i have to go see the therapist after work and THEN have dinner w/ my grandmother and her hubby, phil.  i’m fairly certain everyone involved would like me to have my emotions undercontrol and not all over the place.   

spending a very relaxing weekend on the couch watching back episodes of Firefly on hulu.com. got the blankets and pillows just so, cute chili dog playing catch with herself on the other side of the room. the dog and i are the only ones here. as a rule, i never turn on the lights. a lifetime of migraine headaches and dark rooms have become the norm. so when i went downstairs last night, i discovered the dining room light on. a room i rarely use and even more rarely walk thru. the question becomes ‘who turned on the light?’ cuz i know it wasn’t me.

oh well, no one got me during the night so i guess i’m safe…still have a headache tho.

i like to DVR american idol so i can watch the last part of it and pretend i have any sort of clue what’s going on when the girls gather at the office water cooler the next day (sadly, we actually do have a Real Live water cooler). last night, they had Fantasia out there to sing. two things were funny about that. one, she dances like some artist i’ve seen before and i can’t put my finger on it. it’s driving me nuts. two, and i had to rewind and watch this several times, is the look on simon’s face at the ending of the song. it was somewhat familiar as i was sporting the same expression.

it’s going to drive me nuts until i figure out where i’ve seen her dance style before. holler if you know.
